Weekday Special: Champaign County Fair!

The Champaign County Fair is in town! We decided to go check out all the infamously fatty fair foods with our friends Chase, Troy, and Whitney.

We could see the fair as we drove in, the flashing lights were an attraction by itself!

The admission fee was $5 each which we thought wasn't that bad of of a price. Tickets for rides were $1.25 with most rides costing 2 tickets!

As we walked in to the food area, the smells just hit us like a brick wall. It smelled like a cauldron of potatoes, grease, and sugar!

The first thing we decided to try is the ever notorious deep fried twinkie! While we were there, we opted for a deep fried snickers bar too!

Our friend Troy got a funnel cake for us to split!

Tiffany got powdered sugar all over her.

Yanfen saw people carrying giant corndogs so of course we had to have one! We also got a lemon shakeup to go along with it! We don't know what they put at the bottom of the cup, but they sure put in a lot of ice and water! After which it was shaken for a good 5 minutes!

We accidentally lined up by height...

After the food we decided to go on some rides! First we went to the ... Which had a maze made of clear plastic. It was so hard trying to figure out which way to go! We were so slow that at the end the fair person started directing us...

After navigating through the glass, it lead to a mirror house upstairs!

Next we went on Yanfen's favorite ride, and the only one she wasn't scared of, the swings!

Tiffany and Yanfen got very nauseous after so that was the end of the rides. For the future, ride THEN eat all the fatty foods!

Final Review

Environment -10/10

It's the county fair! What do you expect? It was crowded; it was dark; and it smelled good! Everyone was noisy and everyone was having fun! The twirling lights from all the attractions were super cool and they actually had a real bathroom instead of a porta-potty.

Definitely a good place for a date or for hanging out. If you are on a date, be sure to bring money for the fair games!

Deep Fried Snickers and Twinkie ($4 each)

Yanfen (Taste 9/10 Price Worth 3/10) -  the deep fried stuff didn't taste as artery chocking as I thought it would. It didn't seem that oily because it was covered in so much powdered sugar... It was really good! Personally, I liked the snickers better with all the melted chocolate. The twinkie kind of mashed with the dough on the outside and I couldn't tell where it began. The inside of the twinkie was still cold which was an interesting contrast to how burning hot the out side was!

Tiffany (Taste 7/10 Price 2/10) - The deep fried snickers was pretty tasty and sweet; the deep friedness doesn't give you a oily after taste that you find with other fried food like chicken fingers or fries. I wasn't a big fan of the deep fried twinkie (shocker!) The dough mixed with the friedness so there was just the 'dough' and the cold cream inside. I guess I was expecting the dough to becoming softer and kind of fall into your mouth in a succulent way (I know deep fried oreos taste amazing like that!)

Funnel Cake (No idea about the price.. thanks Troy!)

Yanfen (Taste 8/10) - the funnel cake tasted like pure sugar with the heaping coating of powdered sugar. It kind of tasted like popcorn chicken without the chicken part.. It was really hard to pull apart, not ideal for sharing!
Tiffany (Taste 5/10)- I must have had way too many funnel cakes in my life that I can tell all of them apart. This funnel cake fell in the middle. It was loaded with sugar (which is good since I've had some where its run out!), but it was fried waaaay to much for me. It had an oily aftertaste (if not covered in sugar) and was bordering on crispy in a bad way.

Giant Corn Dog ($5 each)

Yanfen (Taste 6/10 Price 7/10)- the giant corn dog looked more special than it tasted. It looked cool since it was so big but it didn't taste any different than a corn dog you would buy at a store. For it's size, $5 wasn't that bad!

Tiffany (Taste 2/10 Price 1/10)- I must seem like I'm giving horrible reviews of the fair food, but I swear I usually love it! The corndog was massive, literally two regular hotdogs stuck end to end and fried in batter. My biggest complaint is that it was DRY! It made you crave water like mad, and I only put enough ketchup to cover half (big mistake) In the end my mouth couldn't take it anymore so I gave the other half to Whitney.

Lemon Shake Up ($5 each)

Yanfen (Taste 6/10 Price 4/10) - We forgot to take a picture of this but the cup was pretty huge. We couldn't hold it well with one hand! It mainly tasted like sugar water to me. It was good, but not that special. As for the price, I'm pretty sure it was just sugar, water, ice and a slice of lemon!

Tiffany (Taste 6/10 Price 2/10)- It was a very sweet drink, like lemonade if you took out most of the acidity. I liked it, but I feel like I could make that same drink for less than a dollar (they basically make it in front of you!) The cup was huge, but I swear over half of it was ice. It did make the corndog easier to eat :)
