Basil Thai (14/114)

We are officially into the double digits! Only 99 left to go!

Today we decided to head over to Basil Thai across the street from J' Gumbo's.

The restaurant is definitely one of the bigger ones on campus (or at least that's what it seems like). They have an impressively large menu filled with dishes that we neither knew how to pronounce or define. Luckily, they had translations below the names along with a list of the most popular dishes!

To order, you just go up to the front desk where you pay and is given a number. Then you can sit anywhere and wait for the food to come! On the side there is a faucet where you can get water and different kind of hot sauces.

Tiffany decided to get the Peanut Sauce Lover and Yanfen got the Pad See Ewe.

Final Review

 Environment - 8/10

The restaurant is very big and airy and there are a lot of Asian decorations along the walls.

The staff tend to stay behind the counter which is good if you want privacy

Most of the seating was at little tables but along the wall were a few seats that are composed of half booths and half chairs. Most of the clientele seems to be Asian, and some people looked like they were studying on laptops.

This place would be great for any social setting, lab meetings, hanging out, or a date!

SAUCE.

Really, they did an excellent job of naming the dish. However, if you are like me and don't like a flood of just sauce this might not be the dish for you. If the sauce was on the side it would be perfectly okay, but since the rice is on the same dish all you can taste is peanut sauce flooding the dish. The rice no longer sticks together because its swimming in sauce. The sauce itself is very peanut-y and sweet which wasn't so bad but it was just too overwhelming. The vegetables and beef were cooked about average, but nothing that stands out. I was pretty disappointed because their dishes are usually not bad; maybe it was a chef in training? It was pretty pricey compared to every place, but I did save all the sauce so maybe I'll cook my own rice and try to get another meal out of it..

Pad See Ewe - Yanfen

As a pretty regular customer to Basil Thai, I was surprised and disappointed in my dish. It was extremely salty and there was too much sauce. The noodles soaked it all up and it was very unappetizing. I would like to think that this was a one time fluke but next time I am definitely getting something else.
